the truth behind the choice

what it took for me to decide to use Young Living

In 2014 I randomly started making soaps. I am not sure if I got sucked down a Pinterest rabbit hole or what, but I loved that I knew what was in them and that they were pretty.  I loved that my artsy fartsy pal Hil could carve designs in them and they looked like little works of art.  So, I decided I was going to start ordering oils online, and I did this for 3 years.  I didn’t do any research.  I chose the brand that looked the prettiest (true story and totally lame), and I made my DIYs and cleaners and even my detergent.  I really thought I bought a ticket to wellness.

But we kept getting sick.

I decided to look into labeling and ingredients and see just what I should expect from these bottles of oils.  Turns out, I was pouring my money into a product that was diluted and “cut” (adding in substitute substances that kinda smell the same, but totally not the same) with other things that weren’t listed on the bottle.  Um, totally not cool.  No wonder they weren’t working. So I decided to do my homework.

I dug for any information I could find on essential oils and their benefits.  Ya’ll, when I become interested in something I become slightly obsessed, and I will devour anything I can find on the topic/product.  I want to know it ALL.  I am totally part geek, but I’m also part skeptic- so  I needed to know for SURE that this whole oil deal was legit.  I just didn’t want to make another uneducated decision.  I had to know the answers.  I have listened to hours upon hours of podcasts, watched documentaries, read books. I even started following some of the most brilliant minds in the industry on social media… still do. And what I discovered was that deception was pretty much common practice in the essential oil world.  It is ALL in the labeling.  Like, it’s some tricky stuff.  It had me shaking my head in confusion. How is this legal? Some of this garbage could probably straight up burn your skin or make you sick. Scary. So scary.

So now that I was educated on what the real story was, what did I do? I got a Premium Starter Kit through Young Living. It is a killer deal- 11 amazing oils PLUS a diffuser (awesome), and you get 24% off your products forever and ever.  But that’s not even the best part! Young Living is the only company that has a seed to seal promise.  They are watching out for us and watching the distillation process the whole way through.  What you see is actually what you get with them.  How do I know that?

Because they worked. We feel better.  And it

I can make a scrub or diffuse them… we can ingest them and apply them topically, and they actually help support our systems! I have gradually replaced every toxic thing in my home (even makeup!) and it is one of the best decisions I have ever made.  I love that no matter how much I learn, there is always so much more to discover. To me, its like reading the best book ever, except it never ends.  To know that I am supporting our systems with everything I do- well, that’s something huge. By trusting Young Living, I get to choose wellness every single day, and that’s the best choice of all.

XO-Be Well.

Why Be Well?

I suppose the whole “healthy living/wellness” thing could be generational.  I don’t entirely recall “healthy living” being a topic that was discussed while I was growing up. We went to the doctor when we were sick, and at the end of the day we were doing just fine. What I could count on was bronchitis in the Fall and again in the Spring. I got the stomach flu every time anyone even mentioned it.  (Seriously, that happened every year until I was like 32).  We didn’t know about alternatives. We didn’t know how to  treat illness with anything other than drugs. I just knew I was a weakling, bound for sickness.

My family was in a constant state of treatment, and what we needed was prevention.

I recall a handful of times that my mother was healthy. Just a couple of memories. She suffered from chronic and debilitating migraines, which would throw her into bouts of depression.  She would go to the doctor and they would prescribe her medicine- which would ultimately cause a side effect that prompted a visit to an additional doctor or specialist, an additional drug,  and additional side effects. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Doctors upon Doctors were treating her, but they were getting nowhere. The medicines she was taking were not curing her, they were destroying her.  It wasn’t long before we realized this was a cycle.  For so long, her tiny body was pumped with so many chemicals that it didn’t even know how to function without them. But how do you stop it? Where do you start?  We didn’t know what to do.  She was in so much pain, and all we wanted was for her to feel better. If I am honest,  I was just so angry that she was always sick all the time- I still am sometimes.  I so desperately wanted her to be around and healthy. I didn’t understand why nothing was working. Nothing could fix her, and I hated it.

I remember her crying after I had my youngest son and saying to me “Jordan, I just want to be better. I want to be there.  I just want to be well”

Oh how I wish I knew then what I know now!  How I wish that I could have taught her another way.  One free from side effects.  One to break the cycle.  One that gave her an option. One that could have given us a chance to keep her.  One that could have saved her life. So, there you have it.  She is my WHY. It was a lesson learned from a broken heart and a broken system.  I want everyone to know that there are alternatives, what they are, and where to find them.  I want everyone to know that it is so much easier to prevent disease than it is to treat it.  It is knowing that what you put in your body should always help you, not cause side effects that harm you. I don’t want anyone to be in the dark ever again.

Below is a quote from Gary Young, the founder of Young Living:

garyyoungquoteFriends, that says it all.

I will not stop until everyone understands that there is a better way.  Because there is,  I’ve found it, and it is here for you too.  It isn’t just about yummy smells and sugar scrubs, (but that stuff is #1). It’s about creating a life of health and happiness.  It’s about waking up one day and saying “wow, I can’t remember the last time I felt bad” and knowing your why for choosing to Be Well.

In the coming weeks, I will be chatting with you all about how I got started with Young Living, and I will explain just how easy it is to get your family on a journey to health. I am pumped to get 2018 started!

Thieves all-purpose cleaner- a science experiment

Since we now know that the contents of our household cleaners are filled with yuck, we now ask the question, “do natural products even work?”, and I wondered the same thing. I associate a clean shower with burning lungs, and Clorox wipes with dry, chapped hands…but they disinfected and tackled any job.

Or did they?

As I’ve said, I’m no scientist. However, my pal and fellow Young Living lover Courtney Jordan has quite a knack for it! A while back she did a little experiment on how well our Thieves cleaner works. She compared Young Living Thieves cleaner to popular brands such as Lysol (L), Clorox (Cx), and Method (M). The control is labeled C:

This is 15 days out. According to her findings, the Method cleaner started getting funky at 8 days, Lysol at 10, and Clorox at 12. Thieves is going strong at 15! I’m don’t know about you, but I would rather clean my home with something I know is clean, plant based, and WORKS.

So what is in Thieves?

  • Clove Oil
  • Lemon oil
  • Cinnamon Bark Oil
  • Eucalyptus Radiata
  • Rosemary Oil
  • Alkyl polyglcosides (basically derived from sugars, usually glucose derivatives, fatty alcohols- vegetable based)
  • Sodium methyl 2-sulfolaurate (biodegradable cutting agent)
  • Water

Thieves is the only thing we use to clean our home- even glass. It is the ONLY bottle under our sink. And since you are only using one product for everything, it stretches your dollar like no other. A 14.4oz bottle of concentrate is around $23, making the cost per quart around $1.57, and cost per oz around $0.05!!

Young Living didn’t stop there. Here are some other goodies that make clean living SO much easier and all contain Thieves essential oil:

Dishwasher Powder

Fruit and Veggie Soak and Fruit and Veggie Spray

Laundry Soap

Thieves Spray (tiny bottle perfect for your purse! Think…public restrooms 😳)

Waterless hand purifier

Hand Soap

And that’s just the household helpers. Thieves blend is in cough drops, toothpaste, mouthwash, and mints too!

Saving the best for last, we diffuse Thieves essential oil all.the.time. Fall and Winter declare war on everyone’s immune systems every year, and having this in our air helps to support our immune systems. Supported immune systems = WAY less yuck.

This is by far one of my favorite lines Young Living offers. They make it so simple and affordable to have a clean and healthy home. Living in small town America, its often hard to find clean alternatives without driving to the nearest city, or breaking the bank. Thieves is your solution.

So I ask you this….

What’s under YOUR sink?

let’s all think dirty, shall we?

We consumers, we are some trusting folks. We go to the market or grocery store and pick up what we need. We fill our carts with our lists, and if you are anything like I am, you throw in the extra junk for no reason at all. Each trip we take is out of necessity or habit, and for some of us- it can be therapeutic.

Silly us, we assumed someone was looking out for us! At some point, we stopped looking out for ourselves.

You see, post-WWII, companies got SMART. They understood that families were looking for products that made everyday life a bit easier. “Convenience” products allowed families to spend more time together, and they were a hit. Supermarket shelves were suddenly bombarded with all sorts of gadgets and products that solved so many problems we thought we had, and consumerism became a patriotic duty. Decades later, the typical family is busier than ever, and we have evolved– except a lot of those products haven’t. We throw what we know in the cart. We TRUST what is on those shelves, in our cabinets.

In 1976, the Toxic Substances Control Act was born. The EPA was granted the authority to require reporting, record-keeping, restrict and test chemical substances and mixtures. Accountability is awesome, right? Sure is, unless you exclude a ton of categories like food, drugs, cosmetics, and pesticides. Things that we eat, things that go inside our bodies, and go Well.. a lot of those don’t count. Continue reading “let’s all think dirty, shall we?”
